About Volunteer Vacations

The Seattle Central Community College Fall 2010 WEB 110 class decided to put together a simple website about something that interested us - as students, travelers, and volunteers in our community. Therefore, the Volunteer Vacations website was created.

We hope this site will provide basic information to you about what volunteers vacations - also known as volunteerism - has to offer. It can be an enriching experience, turning a plain vacation into a chance to live like locals and offer your skills and help to develop and preserve communities.

Types

Community Development - Work with underserved communities across the world that are trying to develop and progress with the ever-changing global, and local economy. These communities may lack the resources, social, educational, or other, to be fully proactive on the daily challenges they face.

Environment - Work on variety of conservation projects, including tree planting, erosion and salinity control, seed collection, construction and maintenance of walking tracks, endangered flora and fauna surveys and monitoring, weed control, habitat restoration, and heritage protection.

Poverty Assistance - Help build decent, affordable housing around the world, work with small farmers to increase organic yields, teach in village schools, help plan and develop water sources and distribution, and assist in clinics.

Experiences

Testimonies Image "My volunteer experience with Global Seekers Development Expeditions in Kenya was an unforgettable one. I performed the role of community outreach volunteering with Shauri Yako Community and Youth Support Center. I had the opportunity to work with youth and women's groups surrounding issues such as HIV/AIDS. My time spent there has encouraged me to pursue a career in international development to continue learning about the global issues that affect people at the local level. The most difficult part of the process I found was returning home."
~ Megan Hewer, Kenya

"I'm sure when I ponder my life experiences, during the twilight of my years, I will regard my six weeks in Thailand as six of the most sensational weeks of my life... I traveled to Thailand hoping for an enriching experience. What I found exceeded my wildest expectations."
~ Chris Cox, Thailand
